Casting & voices
Every character speaks with one voice, or one voice per language. This page covers where voices come from and how to cast them in a project's Cast tab.
Where voices come from
The voice picker has three tabs. Voices from all three can be used on every plan.
| Tab | What it is | Preview |
|---|---|---|
| Studio | 30 curated voices, each with a one-word character. Best range of acting and the only voices that support single-pass two-speaker scenes. | Free |
| Acteme Specials | Character voices crafted by the Acteme team. Their ids start with voice_. | Free |
| Library | A large catalogue of additional voices, searchable by language, gender, pitch and free text (gravelly, narrator, teen …). | Try renders a short Lite sample, about 40 credits |
The Voices page in the studio browses the same catalogue outside a project.

Casting a character
Characters are created automatically when you import a script with a character column, or added by hand with Add character. Each character has:
- Voice. Who speaks. Press play to hear a preview.
- Model. Leave it on Project default unless this character needs Pro while the rest of the project uses Lite, or the other way round.
- Default style. Used for every line that has no style of its own. Keep it short:
gruff, nervous and quick. - Notes for the team. For your writers and directors; never sent to the model.
Put permanent traits in the voice choice and keep the default style short. Re-describing a character's age, accent or timbre on every line is the most common cause of voice drift.
Changing a character's voice, default style or model marks their rendered lines stale in each language where the audio would change, so you can re-render just those.
Auditions
Each character has an audition line for trying voices before you commit to rendering the script. Type something characteristic, or use the suggested sample, and press play. Auditions are rendered as one-off speech and cost credits like any other line; they never become takes in the script.
Per-language casting
In a project with several languages, each character can use a different voice in each language. That's how dubbing usually works: the German Varga is a different actor from the English one.
The Languages table in the character form lists every project language with its voice, an optional style override and its own audition line.
- Add a voice for other languages creates Voice 2, Voice 3 …; then move languages onto it in the table.
- Use for all puts every language back on one voice.
- Removing a voice moves its languages to Voice 1.
- Audition all renders every language's audition line with its own voice and style, so you can compare the cast side by side.
Deleting a character
Deleting a character keeps their lines in the script but leaves them unassigned. Unassigned lines can't be rendered until you cast someone else.
